Bucs MDMD RND1 Pick 3 - Bucs Select

With the Third Pick in the 2010 NFL Mock Draft

The Tampa Bay Bucs / Sports Fantasy Guide Select: Eric Berry

    5'-11" - 204 lbs - Safety - Tennessee Volunteers

With the third pick overall in this year's draft the Buccaneers could look to draft a pass rusher seeing how they finished with only 28 sacks last year. That number was good for 26th in the NFL. This year's draft is full of defensive lineman who can rush the passer so I would hold off with drafting that position for now. Safeties are not usually drafted this high but Eric Berry is a big time talent. All the great teams have big time safeties such as Pittsburgh (Troy Palamalu), Baltimore (Ed Reed), Indianapolis (Bob Sanders when healthy), and New Orleans (Darren Sharper).

Berry is the complete package, he can come up and stop the run as well as drop back in coverage. Last year Berry thrived in Monte Kiffin's NFL style defense. To me, this means that he will be able to succeed in NFL style defenses. Look for Berry to be an immediate impact in the Buccaneers secondary in 2010.

I cant argue this pick in principle. The only reason I wouldnt agree with it, is because I think the first 2 picks are different with the Rams taking Jimmy Clausen and Suh dropping to the Lions. That will leave Gerald McCoy for the Bucs and I dont think they pass on him.

No way. I love Berry, but you don't take a safety in the top 3, sorry. If the DT's go 1-2 as you suggested, the Bucs will be devastated. If they can't trade with a team wanting Claussen, then I think they go:
    Derrick Morgan, DE, GT
    Jason Paul-Pierr, DE, USF

Those guys help fill a big need for the Bucs, as they desperately need help on the D-Line. I think they end up with one of the DT's though as I don't think they go 1-2.

I agree that taking a safety at #3 is pretty high but my thinking is that there are so many great pass rushers in this years draft that they will be able to pick one up with their second round pick. But if St. Louis does actually take a QB in the real draft I would expect them to pick up one of the DT's.

I dont have a problem at all with the pick in fact I think Berry in the long run is the best player coming out of this draft. BUT when I see a Safety coming out they usually do not get drafted this early.

    Thanks for stopping in SFG

I agree that Berry is a stud but history tells us that a Safety will not go in the Top 5. It is hard at this time to really read through the smokescreens about a possible trade up or down.
I think TB goes DT (if a QB goes in Top 2) or OT - Russell Okung. If Freeman is the real deal he will need some protection.

I am thinking Okung as well if both DT's go 1 and 2 before the Bucs selection. Freeman is the real deal and they are treating him right and letting him slowly dive into the NFL game.

Thanks for stopping SundayK, appreciate it.

I am going with McCoy in my mock draft as of right now and do not think it will change, what are your thoughts? Other options would be McCoy or Berry.
